Background of the Study

Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can have a profound psychological impact on patients, leading to anxiety, depression, and altered self-image. The emotional and psychological needs of breast cancer patients require careful attention, and oncology nurses play a crucial role in addressing these needs. Empathy, defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, is an essential quality for oncology nurses when providing psychological support to breast cancer patients. Empathetic communication can alleviate distress, improve patients’ coping mechanisms, and enhance their psychological adjustment to the challenges of living with cancer.

Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto State is one of the main healthcare providers for breast cancer patients in the region. This study aims to assess the impact of oncology nurses' empathy on the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients, focusing on how empathetic interactions contribute to emotional well-being during treatment.

Statement of the Problem

Breast cancer patients often experience significant psychological distress, including depression, fear of recurrence, and body image issues. The role of oncology nurses in providing emotional support is vital for improving patients' psychological well-being. However, the relationship between oncology nurses' empathy and the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of oncology nurses' empathetic behaviors on the psychological adjustment of these patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of empathy demonstrated by oncology nurses at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients during treatment at UDUTH.
  3. To determine the relationship between oncology nurses' empathy and the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients.

Research Questions

  1. How do oncology nurses demonstrate empathy in their interactions with breast cancer patients at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital?
  2. How do breast cancer patients adjust psychologically during treatment, and what are the main emotional challenges they face?
  3. What is the impact of oncology nurses' empathy on the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital demonstrate high levels of empathy in their interactions with breast cancer patients.
  2. The level of empathy demonstrated by oncology nurses significantly contributes to the psychological adjustment of breast cancer patients.
  3. Empathetic communication by oncology nurses leads to improved emotional well-being and better psychological coping mechanisms among breast cancer patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on breast cancer patients at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital and assess the relationship between oncology nurses' empathy and the psychological adjustment of these patients. Limitations include the difficulty of measuring empathy objectively and the reliance on patients’ self-reported emotional states.
